How do YOU say South Dakota?

I was telling someone just the other day about our upcoming trip to South Dakota to attend my brother's High School Graduation. The person stopped me and asked me to say South Dakota again. I did, and they asked me to repeat it, 3 times! Finally, they chuckled and asked me, "Did you know that you do not say the "th" sound in South Dakota? Rather you say, Sou Dakota. I was watching your mouth as you said it and you never made your tongue make the "th" sound." I had to laugh and agree. I am not altogether sure that this is typical for ALL South Dakotans, but I do know in MY family, we don't. My grandparents were from German/Russian immigrants. My grandfather has been deceased for about 7 years now, but he was never able to say the "th" sound. If you asked him how many cows he had, he would tell you, "I had turty tree cows." Now, my mother and other next generations, don't have the german accent, but they all say "Sou Dakota". I guess on my next trip up I will have to take note and see how many South Dakotans say South Dakota like Lawrence Welk! On the other hand, everyone there will be so fascinated with my husband's drawl (which he lays on thick for the benefit of the intrigued midwesterners) and the southern lilt I have developed from living here almost half of my life, that it might be kind of hard to determine. LOL I wonder if my children have picked this up as well? I know they say things like, "ya'll" and "fixin' to" but I wonder if any of my midwestern has come thru their speech? Ok, I just asked each child, ranging in ages from 13 - 8 to say it and the 2 boys say the "th" sound and both girls do NOT! My husband doesn't either! Ok that is definitely funny. I wonder how that managed to happen? Speaking of South Dakota, I have a lot to do as we are leaving Friday. So, I need to get in gear and clean house and pack. Ya'll have a blessed day and I guess I'll write more later.
